Avenging Beauty

So this past weekend like any good nerd I saw The Avengers. So everyone and their mom has reviewed it and said “Fuckin’ Hell! This movie is amazing!” Well they’re all right. It is a pretty awesome movie. We have a big budget movie put out by one of the largest studios in the world with an A-list cast, a director who has more than proven himself in the sci-fi/action genre and an infallible storyline. Anything short of amazing would be unacceptable. If this movie isn’t good then everyone involved should never work again. There’s a formula for success and they followed it. Makes you wonder how movies like Green Lantern and Spiderman 3 missed the mark.

10 out of 10: It’s no wonder there is already talk of a sequel.

So this week I turned to my precious Netflix for some good old dark drama. Sleeping Beauty. So I watched this because I am a fan of Emily Browning. I love Sucker Punch and The Uninvited. Now maybe I’m not a very deep person, but I feel like this movie had an overall feeling of blah. Now I know this is one of those “Lets show the dark kinky side of supposedly distinguished white upper-class men.” But honestly it was just kind of flaccid. Pun intended. We’re dropped into the world of a  social misfit who will probably do anything for money and can’t sustain a basic human relationship. She puts herself in knowingly terrible situations and freaks out when they go horribly wrong. I was just angry after watching this movie and I still kind of am.

3 out of 10: The technical elegance of the film comes with an air of pretentiousness that I just can’t forgive.

Cheers

Horrorgasm!

So this past Friday my friends and I went see Cabin in the Woods. I’ve been wanting to see this movie for a long time now and I’m so glad it lived up to my expectations. Like every good horror movie there’s more to it than just some horny college kids getting offed in the woods. There is a pretty unique twist to this one even though they let you in on it within the first 5 minutes. I’m not gonna give any spoilers because I think the trailers give away too much already, but I will tell you it does not disappoint. Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard make an amazing team and they manage to keep the audience entertained with a sort of Sam Raimi approach that culminates with one big Horrorgasm.

Also the cast was just perfect. And in true Whedon form we see some familiar faces and characters. Amy Acker and Fran Kranz are both the voice of reason for their respective “sides”. And I can only hope that with Chris Hemsworth being in this and the upcoming Avengers movie, Joss will bring him into the family.

All in all I had a great time watching this movie. It was fun from start to finish.

10 out of 10: Now I really can’t wait to see The Avengers.
